Feel Good Friday – Hanging Out With You Tonight

October 3, 2008

Sometimes it feels like the only reason the world kicks you in the balls is so that, while you’re down on the ground cradling your fractured children, it can rear back and plant a boot right in your teeth. It’s been a rotten rat-fucking week for your boy. I’m not feeling well, I’ve gotten a ton of bad news lately, I’m cranky and irritable and generally pissed off all the time, but you know what?

One of my favorite bands ever, The Queers, is gonna be here tomorrow. So as Joe Queer and company would say, “Fuck this world, I’m hanging out with you tonight.”

I called in sick to work today and stayed in bed ’til noon
And now I just don’t care what’s going on outside this room
Things aren’t getting better
My future’s not too bright
Fuck the world I’m hanging out with you tonight

[insert whoas here]

Me and you will walk around so pointlessly
Smashing things, jacked up on way too much caffeine
I’m really going nowhere
I hate this shitty life
Fuck the world I’m hanging out with you tonight

[more whoas]

Fuck the world I’m hanging out with you tonight

[repeat until the end]

I’ve seen them once before already, which was awesome. They didn’t have Wimpy or Danny Vapid with them, unfortunately. They didt have former Teen Idol and Nashvillian Phillip Hill, though (I think; I won’t bet on it). I have no idea who is in their current lineup, but so long as Joe Queer is there it doesn’t really matter that much.

Feel Good Friday: Wild Irish Rose

September 5, 2008

This is kind of a melancholy FGF, because this is my favorite local band, I’ve seen them like 20 times, and their last show is September 13th. It’s sad when things like this happen, but at least I’ll know to get down to Headliners and catch their last performance, no matter what. (They played on my birthday, but I didn’t go. D’oh!) It’s only $10, so I have no excuses despite my mild distaste for the venue of performance’s lack of parking.

Yes, I am in the video. Repeatedly. Mostly it’s my back, though, because I’m a moron. Still, that’s me in the BrooklynHookers.com teeshirt (black, lettering in a circle, fat guy… you can’t miss me). This video was one drummer and two or three rhythm guitarists in the past, so probably about 2003 or 2004. Just my best guess.

I Couldn’t Wait For Feel Good Friday

September 4, 2008

I can’t get this song out of my head, so in an effort to save myself, I’m going to spread it to others. Misery loves company, and I’m on a major rocka/psychobilly kick lately. My undying love of all things cheesy and horror-themed spills way over into my musical tastes, too.

The HorrorPops are touring the States come October, and that means I’ll be driving to either Chicago or Atlanta to see them. And I’ll probably buy this shirt, too.

Feel Good Friday: I DARE You.

August 29, 2008

Of all of Damon Albarn‘s insane projects, Gorillaz is my favorite because it’s so unstoppably funky in an experimental trip-hop sort of way. If you don’t shake your ass to this video, you are the whitest person in the history of honkeydom.

Feel Good Friday: Psychobilly Freakout!

August 22, 2008

I love this song, I love this band. They didn’t play this last time I saw them play (that I can remember, but I was kind of feeling the cumulative effect of a multitude of beverages), but I hope they will play this song and Galaxy 500 the next time I see them.

Feel Good Friday – Dancing in Rock and Roll High School

August 15, 2008

I love Rock and Roll High School. It’s the right combination of insane and cheesy to really sit well in my heart. The Ramones hang out with PJ Soles? Sure, I’m definitely down with that. Even if it’s too late to get the Feel Good Friday blogroll bump.

Feel Good Friday: Space-pop

August 1, 2008

This one has a little bit of back story (and you could probably use the whole album, because it’s catchy as hell). When I was in my second senior year of college, I lived with a guy who would sit around and play guitar all the time. He’d invite all his stoner friends over and they’d hang out downstairs, doing whatever it is drug users do when I’m not around, and listen to music. One of the revelations was this particular album by The Flaming Lips, Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots. I was just blown away, because I’d not paid any attention to The Flaming Lips since She Don’t Use Jelly came out in 1993. I had no idea they had gotten that interesting!

I won’t say I got really into them, but I love how layered the music is, and how everything seems to work together so perfectly, be it live instruments or weird sound effects. I also like Wayne Coyne’s spacey delivery and just how science fictiony the whole album feels. Anyway, that’s beside the point.

One day I was driving my mom somewhere (the store? bail bondsman? who knows.) and I put this album in the car on low. She actually made me turn it up so she could listen to it, laughed, and asked me just what in the world it was. I had no idea how to describe it, so I said, “Uhh… Space pop love songs for robots.” So there you go.

And now you know the rest of the story.

Other Friday Feel-Gooders: Ginger, SQ, Sharon on the Cobb, Left Wing Saltine, NewsComa, Badger, Scout, Brains, Jag, Moral Metamucil.

I Whupped Batman’s Ass!

July 19, 2008

The song is “I Whupped Batman’s Ass” by Chicago’s most talented and famous schizophrenic homeless musician, Wesley Willis (without The Fiasco). I figured what with all the Batman frenzy that you guys might want to hear about the time Batman got beaten up by a 300lb, 6’5″ bum on the bus. Plus the video is pretty funny, considering it’s Killer Croc.

Rock over London. Rock on Chicago. Wheaties, breakfast of champions.

“I’m Downright Amazed at What I Can Destroy With Just a Hammer”

In a summer mood

Think I’ll have a beer and lay in the hammock tomorrow.
